Law & Order: How to Enforce User Permissions in Dynamics 365 Business Central

Updated: Oct 15, 2021

In any business, setting up the appropriate level of permissions is vital to ensure everyone can do the tasks that they are required to do, without the temptation of doing things they should not be doing. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) in its 2016 report found the average loss for a small to medium sized business was $150,000. Typically, the incident will have gone on for well over a year before being addressed. Finally, nearly 60% of all victim organizations are unable to recover any of their losses due to fraud, therefore, setting up strong controls at a system level is vital for any business. Thankfully, Dynamics 365: Business Central makes it easy.

With the Permissions recording tool, Business Central allows Super Users to train their staff on a process while creating the permission set that the end user will be working with in the system.

1. Open Permission Sets and begin by creating and naming a new Permission Set.

2. Once your permission set has been entered, select Permissions from the top ribbon and begin recording.

3. Once you have begun recording, in a separate tab perform the task you want that user to do normally and click Stop recording when you are finished.

And there you have it! Fully customized user permissions that will allow your users to do exactly what you need them to do and no more.
